With new and niche streaming services jostling for monthly subscriptions, we now live with the knowledge that, whatever we're doing, something is happening on TV…and it's really good. Good TV became, if not the norm, then at least plentiful enough to not seem rare. Sometime after The Sopranos and Mad Men and Breaking Bad inspired the label “prestige,” TV creatives had a business case for nuanced, introspective shows. They were plopped among filler sitcoms, game shows, and one-off variety specials built around celebrities or designed to meet advertising goals. Ever since stations stopped signing off at night with the national anthem and a test pattern, there was the knowledge that whatever you were doing, something was happening on TV. ![]()
